A City in Amber

A City in Amber is a portrait of the city of San Diego during the coronavirus pandemic, during which the piece was composed. San Diego is famous for its sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, when the city is bathed in an amber light. The title has a double meaning, though, as I imagine a city encased in amber, worrisome and weary, frozen by a global pandemic. While beneath the surface is the energy and intensity of a vibrant city, not in suspended animation but suspended in animation, in bracketed time, waiting.

나는 동양과 서양의 악기를 조합하여 작곡할 때. 각 악기의 익숙한 역할과 어려운 문화 전통의 음악적 상호작용을 만든다. 나는 외부에서 전통 음악을 인식하는 사람으로서 거문고 산조에 대한 인상과 그것의 전형적인 선율적 형태와 변곡 들은 새로운 주기로 걸려져 표현하였다. 제목에서 알 수 있듯이, 예측할 수 없는 한국의 아름다운 담청색 날개 까치의 춤처럼 표현되며, 또한 돌을 치는 것처럼 술대의 날카로운 소리들의 인상을 표현하고자 하였다.
