Dance of Azure and Stone

When composing for Asian and Western instruments in combination, I work to create an interplay of musical impressions of difficult cultural traditions that takes each instrument out of its familiar roles. Here, my impressions of the geomungo sanjo—as someone perceiving the tradition from the outside—and its typical melodic shapes and inflections, are filtered into a novel rhythmic cycle and then taken up by the strings entirely. The title is also a play of impressions: the unpredictable and irregular dances of birds (such as the beautiful Azure-winged Magpie that lives in Korea), and the sharp sound of the suldae against the geomungo like stone striking stone.

나는 동양과 서양의 악기를 조합하여 작곡할 때. 각 악기의 익숙한 역할과 어려운 문화 전통의 음악적 상호작용을 만든다. 나는 외부에서 전통 음악을 인식하는 사람으로서 거문고 산조에 대한 인상과 그것의 전형적인 선율적 형태와 변곡 들은 새로운 주기로 걸려져 표현하였다. 제목에서 알 수 있듯이, 예측할 수 없는 한국의 아름다운 담청색 날개 까치의 춤처럼 표현되며, 또한 돌을 치는 것처럼 술대의 날카로운 소리들의 인상을 표현하고자 하였다.
