Nongak
for mallet percussion duo
2011
9 minutes
Nongak is an arrangement of the third movement of Bear Woman Dances, for piano, composed in 2001, requested and premiered by Luis Rivera and Justin Alexander.
The third movement, Nongak, began as a solo realization of modern nongak (“farmer’s music”), a virtuoso percussion ensemble music popularized by the group Samulnori and master musician Kim Duk Soo. Although this movement is originally composed, it is based upon rhythmic patterns, modulations, and a relentless intensity all characteristic of modern nongak. Here it is transformed once again as a duo for marimbas and vibraphones.
