Mastodon
for bass clarinet, guitar, and piano
2009
around 13 minutes
Mastodon for improvising musicians includes multiple groove structures that support solo improvisation, as well as more open improvisation to connect notated sections, and an extended through-composed second half with complex polyrhythmic textures.
A distortion pedal is required for electric guitar. Additional effects may be employed at the discretion of the performer. An entirely notated version of the piece, which does not require improvisation, is available as Mastodon Rises (2017), for baritone saxophone, electric guitar, piano, and drums.
The piece may also be adapted to other instrumentations.
