This piece is based on the traditional melodic mode called lai yai but also incorporates a number of non-traditional techniques such as shifting drones, rapid tremolo, and a polyphonic approach to composition. The title refers to a genre of traditional pieces for khaen called Lom Phat Phrao (“Wind Blows Through the Coconut Trees”). These pieces are in the lai yai mode but are usually rhythmic and vigorous. This piece develops from a characteristic melodic gesture of the Lom Phat Phrao genre which is stretched out into a long, slow phrase.
